25 Holy City as a Bride
John’s vision of the Holy City as the New Jerusalem is initially seen as a loving and intimate relationship. The joyful quality of the intimate connection that the community within this ‘City of Peace’ has with the Lord is described as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. People and God dwell together in shared happiness like a husband and wife on their wedding day.
The goal of marriage is to join two lives at the inmost levels of love and shared understanding. Between such true soul-mates exists a spontaneous openness, honesty and a complete trust. The closer their lives are interwoven the freer they feel to be more fully themselves.
In the relationship that Divine love is seeking with each one of is, this dynamic is revealed as the goal towards which the Lord of all creation is constantly working. So in place of duty and obedience, we embrace love and trust.
“I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Now the dwelling of God is with men.’”
