11 The Blazing Mountain
John sees the blazing mountain being cast down into the sea which turns to blood destroying the fish and the ships. This illustrates how a burning sense of one’s own rightness or moral superiority is destructive of our ordinary natural affections for others (the ‘fish’), and our understanding of the religious teachings we have taken on board (the ‘ships’).
“The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.”
