20 Seven Bowls of Wrath

John sees seven angels emerging from the Temple to each of whom is given a bowl containing one of the seven plagues of the wrath of God.  They are then commanded from the Temple to pour out the seven bowls onto the earth.  The result of this is a series of terrifying and painful effects felt by the people on the earth, some of whom then curse God for their plight.

The angelic pouring out from heaven of a bowl of ‘wrath’ with its painful consequences has a powerful symbolism.  When we receive a more powerful inflow of divine Love and Light, self-centred parts of our human nature feel threatened.  They react very negatively, feeling attacked and pained by the experience.  We may even be tempted to make the error of blaming and cursing others, including God, for our feelings of being victimised.

“Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, ‘Go, pour out the seven bowls of God’s wrath on the earth.’ … From the sky huge hailstones of about a hundred pounds each fell upon men.  And they cursed God on account of the plague of hail, because the plague was so terrible.'”

(chapter 16 verses 1 and 21)
