17 Michael Defeating the Dragon

Now there is war in heaven between the great red dragon that was threatening the Sun-woman with her new-born infant, and the angel leader Michael. The dragon, now recognised to be ‘that ancient serpent called the devil or Satan, who leads the whole world astray’, loses the battle and is hurled down to the earth.

The great red dragon is a potent symbol of hypocrisy, self-satisfaction and personal pride that threatens every new potential step forward in our spiritual progress. Although appearing to be ‘in heaven’, this dragon’s spiritually destructive nature is at first unrecognised by us. The angel Michael represents the angelic discernment that no one can ever possess the wisdom, purity and power of God. It is His power, when acknowledged, that overcomes the dragon of spiritual pride and hypocrisy.

“And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against … the dragon and his angels … But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon … that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, … was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.”
